Bellingham Academy of Self Defense (BASD) is an organization dedicated to teaching traditional martial arts with an emphasis on Goju-Ryu Karate-Do and the Japanese sword.  We are Bellingham’s original dojo started in 1965 by Sensei Duane Sammons.  Our three lead instructors each have over 30 years of experience in the martial arts and volunteer their time to teach the skills that have the potential to save your life.  It is our mission to hone our students both mentally and physically thus enabling them to handle the daily challenges of life more successfully.

Is BASD and karate the best fit for you? Without knowing your goals it is impossible to say. There are many different popular martial arts being taught by qualified people locally. Have you looked at schools that teach taekwondo, jujitsu, kenpo, judo, or some other art? Do you have an idea of what the differences are? Deciding on a school can be confusing and challenging. Our advice

1. Determine what your goal is, what is motivating you.
2. Do some research on the style and school.
3. Talk to the head instructor.
4. Ask yourself if you feel comfortable with the instructor(s) and students?
5. If you can relate to their teaching style and philosophy
6. Can you attend some classes without a major financial commitment?

We teach the art of karate-do with all of its dynamic blocking, striking, and kicking. The holds, throws, joint locks and ground fighting of traditional Japanese Karate are also taught. We train in the basics, kata (forms), self-defense, free sparring and kobudo (weapons). We are not tournament/sport oriented. We believe the benefits of martial arts go far beyond self-defense or sport. Rather than learning what to do in a cage, we emphasize learning how to control your body and mind.  We want you to achieve something greater than trophies, self-confidence and overall well-being. We strive for excellence not just in the martial arts but in life.

Attend or watch a class any Tuesday or Thursday from 6:00 pm to 7:45 pm or our open class Saturday from 1:00 pm – 4:30 pm.  We are located at 519 E Maple St, Bellingham, WA.
